A man who broke into a flat was snared after his blood was traced for DNA.

Alexander Martin, 39, entered Anthony Miller's property in Glasgow's Kelvindale on December 27, 2020.

The city's sheriff court heard that Mr Miller locked his property on Christmas Day.

Two days later a passer-by noticed an issue at the property and a 999 call was made.

Prosecutor Hannah Sweeney said: "It was later discovered that Martin smashed the right-side window of the ground floor flat by using a rock.

"Martin did not take anything and left the property."

Officers were initially unable to trace Martin.

Ms Sweeney said: "Scenes of crime police attended and DNA was taken.

"Following analysis, a positive DNA match for Martin came from blood that was swabbed in the close."

Martin was traced in April 2021 and he was arrested.

In reply to caution and charge he stated: "F*** off."

Martin pleaded guilty to breaking into the flat with intent to steal.

David O'Hagan, defending, told the court that the matter was "serious" and could attract a custodial sentence.

The matter was deferred to the drug court by Sheriff Tom Hughes.

Martin stated from the dock: "I just want to get help and my life sorted out."
