Glasgow residents have accused workers laying cables of “trashing” their area with dug-up sites sitting unfinished for weeks.

A partially covered hole on a road, a play area torn up with tyre tracks and street clutter blocking pavements for about a month are some of the problems facing Wellhouse people in the Baillieston area.

Disabled and elderly residents are having to carefully navigate around the dug-up spots and drivers must swerve around a hole haphazardly covered by plastic on Wellhouse Gardens.

It is understood workers are laying cables for internet access and firm City Fibre is rolling out the scheme. But residents want to know when it will be finished.

Councillor Kevin Lalley, Labour, said: “It’s a disgrace that a contractor has arrived at our community and created such a mess.

"It is clear that there has been very little consideration shown towards the residents of Wellhouse during these works and their safety and wellbeing has not been considered.

The councillor who has contacted City Fibre added: “I am seeing that there is a lack of supervision, This is unacceptable due to the dangerous condition that roads and footpaths are being left in for sometimes many weeks.”

The site locations in Balado Road and elsewhere don’t have any emergency phone numbers on display, leaving people with no ability to raise issues.

Wellhouse & Queenslie Community Council chair Eddie Andrews described the work as “uncoordinated chaos” and said there is “mess and debris".

He pointed out sand and grit is being washed into gullies and “hardcore was dumped where kids play".

Mr Andrews said: “We totally expect disruption but there is no need for the lack of consideration and regard for health and safety and disabled folk in the area.”

He added: “There doesn’t seem to be any accountability."

Mr Andrews said he wanted to raise the concerns and he doesn’t want other communities facing any similar problems.

The roads impacted include Balado Road, Wellhouse Crescent and Wellhouse Gardens.

City Fibre was contacted for comment.
