A charity has called again on the council to help it find an indoor location for its work providing food for people before the winter.

Homeless Project Scotland operates its food kitchen outside, under the Hielanman's Umbrella bridge in Argyle Street three nights a week.

Hundreds of people are fed on the site and given food to take away.

But the charity says people are queueing in the cold and rain and is looking for help in finding a building where people can sit inside and be warm and dry.

Its kitchen and store under the bridge is also cramped.

Colin McInnes, chairman of the charity, said it has been offered to look at two premises but said they were not suitable.

One at Cadogan Square, in the west of the city centre and close to the Kingston Bridge on-ramp to the M8, is in an area that is very quiet and empty at night.

The charity said it was in an unsafe location and access to the premises was not suitable.

Another, the St Francis Centre in Gorbals, was rejected and is now operating as a council ‘warm bank’ welcome centre.

Glasgow City Council said it is working with the charity but has limited premises available.

Mr McInnes said: “We viewed the site at Cagodan Square. We were concerned about safety.

“Our opinion is this is not safe and appropriate for our service users to come here with their children and family as many do.”

One of the charity’s volunteers, Isobel, looked around outside the Cadogan Square building with Mr McInnes and another staff member.

She said: "I wouldn’t feel safe walking here at night.”

Mr McInnes said the charity would lose volunteers if it accepted the premises.

He added: “How can the council think this is suitable. It’s insulting to offer this building. We can’t say yes to somewhere that’s going to make people unsafe and where volunteers don’t want to come.”

The council said it believes the building meets the charity’s needs.

A spokesperson for Glasgow City Council said: “We are doing what we can to help Homeless Project Scotland find suitable premises, but we have very limited options for them in our own property portfolio.

“Two properties have been offered to Homeless Project Scotland as possibilities, but these were both declined.

“Property at Cadogan Square remains available, which we believe would meet most of the charity’s requirements and where issues identified by HPS could be overcome.

“These premises are available to Homeless Project Scotland on a temporary basis for a nominal £1 rent if they wish to continue searching elsewhere for a permanent base.”

The council said it has asked the charity for its specific requirements on size and location to help it locate somewhere.

The spokesperson added: “The council’s community asset transfer scheme, People Make Glasgow Communities, has also been highlighted to the charity to allow them to express an interest in taking on community venues around the city.

“We are aware that Homeless Project Scotland has been reaching out to other property holders in the city and we encourage them to take the broadest possible approach in terms of their search.

“We remain committed to working with the charity in support of their efforts to move away from their current location at the Hielanman's Umbrella.”

Homeless Project Scotland plan to demonstrate outside the City Chambers tomorrow.
