FIREFIGHTERS came under attack from a missile-throwing yob whilst attending an emergency call.

A brick was hurled at their fire appliance which resulted in damage to the vehicle during the incident on Greenock's Bawhirley Road.

Police and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service say that the safety of the firefighters was 'put at risk' as a result of the mindless attack on Wednesday night, reports The Greenock Telegraph.

Inverclyde Police Area Commander Damian Kane added: "This behaviour is totally unacceptable and we are working with our partners in Scottish Fire and Rescue to identify the persons responsible for this offence."

SFRS Group Commander Mark Gallacher said: "We are committed to keeping all of our employees safe.

"We realise it is a tiny percentage of people within our communities who engage in this type of conduct which can impact the work of crews.

"The SFRS takes a zero tolerance approach to antisocial behaviour towards firefighters and any deliberate damage inflicted upon our appliances. We will work with our Police Scotland colleagues to identify those responsible."

Police hunting the attacker have appealing for anyone with any information about the incident to report this via 101, or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
