A CHEMICAL leak in Motherwell prompted a 999 response yesterday.

Cops, firefighters and a specialist fire unit were sent to Shields Drive shortly after 4pm.

The leak took place within Shields Tower, a high-rise block of flats.

No-one was injured following the incident.

Police have launched an investigation.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 4.35pm on Tuesday, January 17, to reports of a chemical leak within Shields Tower, Motherwell.

“Operations control immediately mobilised two appliances and a specialist unit to the scene.

“There were no casualties and crews left after ensuring the area was made safe.” 

Meanwhile, a Police Scotland spokesperson added: “Around 4.10pm on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, officers were called to a report of a chemical spill at an address on Shields Drive in the Muirhouse area of Motherwell.

“Emergency services attended, it was cleared and there is no further risk to the public.

“Inquiries are ongoing into the circumstances.”
