Supermarkets across Glasgow have started to ration fruit and veg following a poor harvest in Spain and North Africa.

Stores such as Asda, Morrisons and Aldi are enforcing the initiative following a shortage of tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce and peppers.

Asda and Aldi will be limiting purchases of the above items to three per person, while Morrisons will only be allowing two units per person.

With the shortages and rations set to last for several weeks, we took to the streets of Glasgow to find out the public's thoughts.

Glasgow Times:

Heidi McLean, 48, from Springburn, said: "I'm worried about it in the long term.

"It's concerning, especially for families in need or if you've got a lot of children or even people that have low immune systems that need to eat healthily.

"As well, if you have a lack of money, veg is a lot cheaper than most things and can make vegetable soup and things like that. So, not having that is worrying."

Glasgow Times:

Alan Ferguson, 39, from Hyndland, also finds the shortage quite concerning.

He said: "It's a bit of a pain looking for fresh fruit and veg.

"It's not just people you have to worry about in this but also pets.

"My daughter has guinea pigs and we had to go on a bit of a trek last night to get salad bags because all the shops were out.

"I'm a little bit worried but I'm sure it will pass eventually."

Glasgow Times:

However, Kirsty Rizzo worries the issue might become frustrating.

The 33-year-old, from Alexandra Parade, said: "I'm not very concerned at this moment in time.

"But I guess if we can't get what we want week-on-week then it will start to become frustrating more than anything else.

"Since Covid, I think we've just learnt to live differently though, and I have just gotten used to just making do with what we have."

However, some Glaswegians do not think the shortages will have a big impact.

Glasgow Times:

John McCarthy, 78, from the Gallowgate area, said: "I'm not worried about the shortages and restrictions.

"Things like cucumbers can't exactly be frozen and kept, plus when I went into Morrisons just there I didn't see a shortage."

Glasgow Times:

Natalia Niavinnaya, 44 from Dalmarnock, said: "I'm not worried about the shortage in the supermarkets as I usually get my produce elsewhere, like Lidl.

"I think there are still a lot of options in this, there's frozen fruit and veg, and there are other shops, so I'm not really concerned."

Aside from the public, some East End businesses have been somewhat affected by the shortages.

Glasgow Times:

Kameron Beck, duty manager at The Palais, said: "I was doing my shopping last night and they had no cucumbers or tomatoes.

"In the restaurant though, we haven't faced many shortages.

"We are seeing a much worse quality though, which might be coming from the shortage."

Glasgow Times:

The Fork n Knife Cafe also added that they have been okay, but that tomatoes have been a bit harder to get a hold of recently.

However, the cafe is still able to get a hold of them.

A lot of cafes and restaurants, however, have not been hit yet by the shortage.

Both Cool Counter and Coia's Cafe, for example, stated they were "okay" so far.
