A SCHOOL in North Lanarkshire has been commended for its “caring relationships” after an inspection by Education Scotland.

Chapelside Primary, in Airdrie, was praised in a number of areas, with headteacher Wendy Davie singled out for her “strong leadership.”

The report said: “She [Ms Davie] is held in high regard by children, staff and the school community. She has put in place successfully a culture where there are caring relationships across the school, a sense of belonging and the development of a Chapelside family.”

Inspectors found staff were using “a wide range of interventions well” to support children’s needs, helping pupils to engage in learning, and added: “Across the school, children are improving their wellbeing. They recognise their own wellbeing needs and what they need to do to be healthy.”

A number of areas of improvement were identified and discussed with the headteacher and a representative from North Lanarkshire Council, including a need for teachers to improve their approaches to measuring children’s progress, increasing opportunities for children to engage in the use of digital technology and prioritising supporting children to develop their writing skills.

Headteacher Wendy Davie said: “All staff, pupils, parents and the partners in our community were very pleased that we had been recognised as being a strong family, the sense of teamwork was tangible.

“The strength of the school was recognised especially with the care and nurture offered to our children.

“There is a positive feeling within the school and we are all looking forward to taking on the suggested recommendations for improvement. We are determined that our children will be central to these.”
