The cost of weekly staples in Glasgow supermarkets has rocketed by more than the rate of inflation.

Last year, in March, as the Glasgow Times launched our Beat the Squeeze campaign we price-checked a basket of goods that are popular among shoppers.

Throughout the year we highlighted the rising costs of food and energy and promoted the best advice for managing the pounds and pennies as the cost of living increased.

We visited the big six supermarkets, Aldi, Asda, Lidl, Morrisons, Tesco and Sainsbury’s and noted the prices.

We checked the price of bread, milk, eggs, minced beef, a whole chicken, toilet rolls, nappies, pasta, bananas, apples, cornflakes, potatoes, baked beans, morning rolls and Irn Bru.

This week we returned to check the same basket of goods.

We found all six showed a big hike in prices, from 13% to 32%.

While inflation in the UK is running at 10.4% just now and market analysts Kantar found grocery inflation at 17%, the cost of our selected basket of staples jumped by as much as 32% over the year.

Some examples of the increases people are being met with at the check-outs include six eggs in Aldi up from 90p to £1.45, a jump of 60%.

In Lidl, nine toilet rolls increased from £2.05 to £3.49, up by 70%.

In Aldi, nappies rose from £3.19 to £4.99, up 56%.

Tesco recorded a jump in the price of potatoes, from 91p to £1.15, up 26%.

In Sainsbury’s, which has the lowest overall increase in our basket, Irn Bru increased from £1.50 to £1.70, up 13%.

In Morrisons, six eggs increased from 89p to £1.39, a rise of 56%.

The difference over one year for each supermarket was:

● ASDA - difference = £6.87 increase, up by 31.7%.

● TESCO - difference = £6.24, up by 30.1%.

● MORRISONS - difference = £5.43, up by 24.1%.

● SAINSBURY’S - difference = £2.89, up by 13.1%.

● ALDI - difference = £6.23, up by 32.7%.

● LIDL - difference - £5.05, up by 26.3%.

Reports this week showed British grocery inflation rose in March to a record 17.5%.

Kantar said prices were rising fastest in markets such as eggs, milk and cheese.

It said UK households now face an additional £837 for an annual shopping bill if they do not change their habits to cut costs.

Statistics published by the British Retail Consortium and market researcher NielsenIQ this week also showed soaring food prices pushed overall inflation in British shops to its highest in at least 18 years in March.
