The Glasgow Times is on the hunt for the best takeaway lunch spot in the city. We are looking for your recommendations across the city centre, North Glasgow, East End, Southside and West End, and will be judging food based on Value for Money, Taste, Atmosphere, Service and Variety.

Continuing the hunt for Glasgow's best lunch, today I headed to the East End. After several recommendations, I decided to try out Mesa on Dennistoun's Duke Street.

Arriving shortly before 1pm, I was confused for a second as Google Maps told me I was in the right place, but I couldn't see a sign and the green building in front of me had nothing written above the door. Turning the corner slightly just onto Armadale Street,  I saw Mesa painted on the side.

I had a look at the menu that was hanging in the window as I knew I would be ordering to go.

Everyone that suggested trying Mesa recommended their sandwiches so I knew I was going to go for that. Looking over the five options available, I decided to order the grilled halloumi with chipotle mayo, leaves, pickles, fried egg and tomato which cost £9.

Despite it being lunchtime, Mesa wasn't overly busy and I was able to order right away before being offered a seat while I waited - this saved awkwardly standing by the door while I waited which I was very thankful for.

I waited 10 minutes from ordering to getting my sandwich, so if you're going somewhere to grab lunch this is something to bear in mind.

The sandwich was given to me in a small paper bag that was open at the top which wasn't ideal for transporting it back to the office, and some of the mayo seeped through at the bottom onto my jacket.

I quickly realised I was going to need a plate, knife and fork for this sandwich and while it was delicious, it was the messiest sandwich I have ever eaten.

Glasgow Times:

The sandwich was jam-packed with halloumi, and there was a good amount of tomato, lettuce and pickles along with the fried egg. However, for me, there was just too much mayonnaise.

I couldn't finish this sandwich and ended up leaving around a quarter of it. I would eat at Mesa again but as a treat, as I wouldn't want to splash out £9 on a sandwich too often!

Glasgow Times:

What's the verdict?

Value for Money: 3/5 - While it was huge, and more than I could eat for lunch, £9 is a lot of money for just a sandwich.

Taste: 3/5 -  There was a generous amount of halloumi, with plenty of lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and fried egg. However, there was too much chipotle mayo for me and it overpowered the taste of everything else.

Atmosphere: 4/5 - Mesa was fairly busy though there were still a few tables available. There was music playing at a nice volume and it wasn't too hectic or too quiet.

Service: 3/5 - Service was friendly, I went in and ordered right away and then was offered a seat while I waited. I waited a total of 10 minutes from ordering to get the sandwich.

Variety: 3/5 - The Mesa menu features morning rolls, sandwiches, pancakes, soup of the day and 'stuff on or with sourdough', as well as a couple of specials. However, quite a few of the items wouldn't be suitable for taking away for lunch.

Overall score: 16/25
