Families living with dementia in Glasgow are being offered free advice and support with face-to-face clinics.

Dementia UK is partnering with Leeds Building Society to deliver the Closer to Home clinics, where the charity's specialist dementia nurses - known as Admiral Nurses - will provide both emotional and practical support in a comfortable and private setting.

It comes after Dementia UK launched a virtual clinic over the pandemic, which helped over 3600 families.

The clinics will be held in the Glasgow branch of Leeds Building Society between April 26 and May 5.

Admiral Nurse Joe Costello said: “We’re proud to bring our Closer to Home project to Glasgow and look forward to supporting families impacted by dementia in the area.

"We know that dementia doesn’t just affect the person with the diagnosis: families, friends and carers are also impacted.

“The Closer to Home clinics have been a huge success already, helping us to deliver specialist dementia support first-hand.

"It’s been brilliant to see the difference this makes and we are looking forward to supporting people in Glasgow in partnership with Leeds Building Society.

“Dementia is a huge and growing health crisis – someone in the UK develops dementia every three minutes.

"This means it’s more important than ever for us to reach families and offer one on one support from our dementia specialist Admiral Nurses.

"From worries about memory problems to understanding a dementia diagnosis and how the condition progresses, we will be providing practical and emotional advice on caring for someone who lives with this progressive condition, along with giving advice on financial and legal issues.”

Dementia UK began its partnership with the society in April 2020, with a plan to raise £500,000 to help over 2,500 families with dementia across the UK.

The initial target has now been exceeded which means that Dementia UK has been able to provide even more families with appointments with specialist nurses.

Richard Fearon, CEO of Leeds Building Society, said: “Dementia UK was voted as our charity partner by our members and colleagues, and we are thrilled to announce that we’ve already exceeded the £500,000 fundraising target we set ourselves to support the fantastic work they do.

“We are proud to be able to work with the charity to help bring dementia care closer to home.

"We believe everyone who needs the support of a specialist dementia nurse should get one in a safe and secure environment, and we are glad to be able to offer space in our network of branches across the UK to allow this.”

Dementia UK’s Closer to Home clinics will take place on April 26, 27, May 3, 4 and 5 at the Glasgow branch of Leeds Building Society, 182 Hope St, Glasgow G2 2UE.
