COUNCILLORS in Glasgow have been rebuked by the Lord Provost over their behaviour during council meetings.

The last meeting of the council in March was heated and an accusation was made of threatening behaviour.

Before this month’s full council meeting, Jacqueline McLaren, the Lord Provost, delivered the warning to councillors about their conduct.

She said: “I have observed we are failing in our duty to treat one another with the necessary respect and courtesy.”

She said she has had conversations with the political parties’ business managers to “reflect” on the issue.

The Lord Provost added: “I want to remind all members of their responsibility to each other and their constituents."

She added: “[You must] uphold better standards of debate and decorum.

“All members have the right to attend their workplace without feeling abused.”

The Lord Provost did not name individual councillors but addressed her remarks to all members in the chamber.

At the previous meeting, Labour’s Frank McAveety had accused Graham Campbell, SNP councillor, of “unacceptable and challenging” behaviour.

He said when he raised a point of order councillor Campbell had told Labour members to “shut up” and said no action was taken.

When he asked the Lord Provost to address it, councillor Campbell said “you can address it with me outside">

Labour had said it would be taking the matter further while councillor Campbell said councillor McAveety was “scraping an already very empty barrel”.
