Firefighters were attacked by brick-throwing youths amid a spate of callouts to attend open fires.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) say they have responded to two separate calls in the Dumbarton Road area since Sunday, May 7 with support from city cops as they were set upon by a gang of youths.

Despite reporting no injuries amongst the crew, the distressing details of the attack highlight a worrying trend within the Yoker and Scotstoun areas with local residents taking to social media to voice their fears of what they claim has become a ‘nightly’ occurrence.

The first incident took place at 6.36pm on Sunday, when the SFRS say bricks were thrown at firefighters attending an open fire in a park in Dumbarton Road.

A spokesperson said: "Operations Control mobilised one appliance to the scene and on arrival, firefighters were under attack by youths throwing bricks.

"Support was provided by Police Scotland and there were no injuries.

"Crews left the scene at 7.08pm after ensuring the area was made safe".

Then, just three days later, the SRFS were needed again, as they received another call of a fire, this time in the Yoker area.

The spokesperson added: We were alerted at 8.30pm on Wednesday, May 10 to reports of a fire in the open near to Yoker Evangelical Church, Dumbarton Road, Glasgow.

"Operations Control mobilised one appliance to the scene and on arrival, firefighters found a garden bin alight containing four unidentified cylinders.

"A second appliance was mobilised to provide a thermal imaging camera and crews extinguished a well alight garden bin.

There were no casualties and crews left the scene at 9.55pm after ensuring the area was made safe".

One local took to Facebook to express her concerns for the months ahead.

They wrote: “They’re setting bins on fires, throwing bottles everywhere, scratching and sitting on cars.

“It's just so much and I can only imagine it getting worst coming into the summer.”

Before adding: “There's even an old man on my street who takes his dog for its last walk at 5.30pm and goes to the shop and gets what he needs because he's scared to come out any later.”

Another commented: “Something has to be done to stop this as it really is getting out of control now.

“Parents don't always know what or where their children are simply because they are told one thing and the kids are actually going elsewhere.”
