LABOUR'S Glasgow leader has survived a challenge to his position.

George Redmond won the vote by 20 votes to 15 with challenger Philip Braat falling short in his bid to oust the leader.

Councillor Redmond has been in post for one year after he defeated the previous leader, the late Malcolm Cunning, shortly after the local elections last year.

Labour councillors voted in the contest at a meeting this morning.

Redmond now has the challenge of uniting his group as he looks to try and win back control of the council.

He said: “I’m delighted to have the confidence of the group once again.

"We are continuing to build a strong opposition against the SNP/Tory imposed austerity measures, combat the cost-of-living crisis in the city, and win support ahead for the UK and Scottish parliamentary elections.

"We will campaign hard to ensure Glasgow City Council turns red in 2027.”

The result was closer than the party’s leadership had hoped after it had been suggested that Braat would fail to secure more than a handful of votes.

A City Chambers source said: “This is a dream result for Labour’s opponents.

"We now have a deeply divided Labour group to the extent we are talking about two groups within one party.”

Soryia Siddique was re-elected as deputy unanimously.

She said: “Delighted to have the unanimous vote of the group.

“Looking forward to continuing the great work of our leadership team as we build towards the next General Election.

“We are united to continue to serve our communities and deliver Labour values to our citizens.”

Labour’s business manager Frank McAveety also defeated the challenger to his role, Stephen Curran, by 19 to 15.
