A GLASGOW primary school has called for reinforcement as they look for volunteers ahead of community litter pick.

Pupils at Riverbank Primary School, in Glasgow’s East End, are taking part in the event next weekend to help clean up the ground surrounding the school.

The area around the Dalmarnock school between Auckland Wynd and Springfield Road has been prone to a rise in litter according to those at Riverbank, as well as having little to no natural wildlife in the area due to a poor eco-environment.

However, children at the primary have taken it upon themselves to get the community involved and help clean up the land.

Lead project leader and primary teacher, Kate McGarrity said: “The children are looking forward to getting involved in another litter pick.

“Last year they really enjoyed it and saw how beneficial it was to the community.

“It is such a wide area so we want as many people to get involved as possible if they are free.

“The children have even gone as far as filing adverts for the issue and creating posters to raise awareness.”

The school has also turned the cleaning event into a learning opportunity as staff have added eco-sustainability and green environments into the children's Curriculum for Excellence.

Last year, the school organised the community litter pick with the children really getting involved in the action as the pupils pushed for it to return once again.

Teacher Kate added: “Every year we do an audit around the school and the children could see that litter was becoming an issue as they could see it from the playground.

“We want to be able to have an area we all love and care for, and that is why the kids are going to local care homes, residents ect to get them involved and spread the word.

“We have a community garden in the school and the kids love it!

"Growing up I almost took it for granted that growing food was normal, but some of the children have never touched soil before or seen something grow.

“It’ll be a fantastic day and we want as many people to come as possible to help out.”

The litter pick will take place on Saturday, June 17, with people asked to meet at the school gates of Riverbank Primary at around 1:30pm.
