MURDERS across Greater Glasgow have almost halved, it has been revealed.

Police Scotland figures released today show seven homicides were recorded during 2022-2023.

Meanwhile, serious assault reports are down by 185.

Reports of rape have also dropped by 37 against the same period last year and there were six fewer reports of indecent/sexual assault.

Crimes of robbery and assault with intent to rob are also down by 20 fewer incidents.

Chief Superintendent Mark Sutherland, Divisional Commander for Greater Glasgow, said: “Homicides in Scotland remain at the lowest level since the introduction of modern crime recording standards and the 48 recorded during 2022-23 was the lowest number in any year.

“Greater Glasgow has contributed to that statistic by recording five fewer murders, down from 12 to seven in this reporting period alone.

“Communities across the city are still mourning the tragic loss of those whose lives were taken so cruelly - each homicide is an individual tragedy with unique circumstances and investigative challenges.

"Securing justice for families and loved ones is a core duty for Police Scotland and important for police legitimacy.”

However, the latest figures show there has been a rise in dishonesty crimes.

Mr Sutherland added: “While these latest figures do affirm that Greater Glasgow is still a safe place to live, work and visit, the city, like the rest of the country, is not immune from the rise in reports of dishonesty.

“These increases represent housebreakings, fraud and theft, including theft of motor vehicles. Overall, these amount to 3,580 more reports while the national increase is 12,100 which is a similar level to the five-year average. It is clear the challenges from the Covid pandemic continue to be felt and new community needs posed by the cost-of-living crisis have begun.

“We continue to work hard with our partners to maximise our public health approach to policing, helping to ensure we offer the right people the right care, from the right agency at the right time.

“We are collectively committed to making Greater Glasgow a safe place for everyone and these latest figures reflect an exceptional and demanding period for policing and the changing needs of our communities.”

The 2022-23 performance report will be presented at the Scottish Police Authority Policing Performance Committee today (June 15).
