This week, the stench of sleaze was once again casting a huge cloud over Scottish politics.

Last Sunday, just as I was submitting my column for last week’s Glasgow Times, the news broke that Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s longest-serving First Minister had been arrested and questioned by Police Scotland as part of their ongoing investigation into the SNP's finances.

Now it must be stated that Nicola Sturgeon was released without charge.

However, the murkiness surrounding the ruling party of Scotland continues to grow ever larger.

As a result of Nicola Sturgeon’s arrest, Humza Yousaf has now made history after not even three months as First Minister.

He’s the only SNP First Minister NOT to have been arrested – Alex Salmond was arrested and later cleared of all charges – though even then Yousaf was a transport minister who drove without insurance.

Before I get further into this serious issue further, I want to address the actions of another well-known political leader.

The UK Parliament’s privileges Committee have delivered a damming verdict on Boris Johnson. He was found to mislead Parliament at a time when the country needed leadership like never before as we tackled the Covid pandemic.

Instead, we had someone in number ten who as the committee have found was breaking the rules he set but then wasn’t upfront to the House about them. I believe this verdict justifies why I was right to call for his resignation when the Partygate revelations emerged last year.

However, before the whataboutery comments inevitably come, SNP supporters need to continue to look closer to home.

We shouldn’t forget Nicola Sturgeon was found guilty herself of misleading Parliament by a cross-party committee over her evidence in relation to the Alex Salmond inquiry.

What has been the most revealing thing this week since Nicola Sturgeon was arrested, is just how weak a leader Humza Yousaf is.

His refusal to stand up to his predecessor and suspend her from the SNP while she is under investigation has exposed who is still really pulling the strings in the SNP.

The only response from our First Minister was to send her flowers and tell SNP MSPs calling for her suspension to back her or quit the party.

Weak and feeble are just two of the adjectives to sum up Humza Yousaf’s actions over this whole affair.

The chaos engulfing the SNP shows they are too distracted to lead Scotland and focus on Scotland’s real priorities.

This arrogant and out-of-touch SNP-Green government are failing on so many levels but do not have the time to tackle these issues as they fight among each other.

From the shame of record drug deaths, to failing our education system and the backlogs in our NHS, the SNP are not focused on Scotland’s real priorities.

When you compare that to the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, he is showing that he is continuing to focus on the real issues facing the country, moving on from his predecessors and standing up to him.

The SNP’s secret Scotland is finally crumbling around them with investigations and more murky claims being a regular feature of the Sunday papers.

It is time to get rid of this out-of-touch SNP government once and for all and I cannot wait till we have our next opportunity at the ballot box to do just that.
