A MARYHILL charity will transform a community space for people to come together after being awarded more than £20k.

G20 Works CIC has been given a grant of £24,484 from The Asda Foundation that will help to repair and modernise the group's building so it can follow its mission to enable young people who have experienced life trauma to have a safe space.

Ryan Rooney, Community Champion at Asda Maryhill, surprised the charity with a cheque that will help refurbish the building to bring it in line with health and safety requirements.

Glasgow Times:

The Asda Foundation surprised 31 different community groups by telling them their Spaces and Places grant application had been successful, with awards totalling more than £600k.

Emily Cutts, director of G20 Works CIC, said: “We are delighted to receive this funding from The Asda Foundation. After going unoccupied for a long time in a state of disrepair, our building has already undergone some work, so it is now usable and hosts a foodbank, women’s and men’s groups, and addiction recovery groups.

“This funding will be vital in completing the refurbishment of the building and it’ll help us deliver essential wider services alongside vital work for young people.”

Ryan Rooney, Community Champion at Asda Maryhill, said: “It’s fantastic to be able to donate this huge amount of funding to G20 Works as they do so much for our local community, and we know the money will make a positive difference to people who need it most.”

Alexandra Preston, senior manager for Asda Foundation, added: “Every community needs a safe inclusive space for people to be together and be themselves.

“Community spaces can be a lifeline, but we know many are in desperate need of funding to maintain, develop and repair these spaces to enable community groups to continue delivering their vital services and activities.

“That’s where Asda Foundation can help with funding. We want to continue playing our part in uniting communities and reducing loneliness by improving community spaces for people to be together.”

Grants awarded by the Asda Foundation can be used for renovations, repairs or transforming outdoor spaces, with projects ranging from upgrading a community kitchen and café, to roof repairs, to refurbishing a whole community building to improve accessibility, to creating an outdoor nature and sensory trail.
