A WOMAN brutally attacked her friend at a New Year's Day gathering over a remark made towards her.

Kimberly O'Neill punched and kicked the victim to the body after a remark was made at a property at Dalmuir Court on Duntocher Road.

It was heard at Dumbarton Sheriff Court on August 1 by procurator fiscal Laura Martin that around 5am on January 1 last year, the comment had been made by the woman towards O'Neill.

She reacted by grabbing the victim before attacking her.

The assault was quickly broken up by other people in the property before O'Neill left the home.

The 29-year-old, of Onslow Road, admitted at Dumbarton Sheriff Court to a single charge of assaulting the woman whilst on bail on January 20, 2021.

At the hearing, her defence solicitor said: "Unfortunately New Year celebrations turned sour. I think this was fueled by a comment by the complainer and the influence of alcohol.

"The [social work] report recommends a community payback order with supervision which would be ideal. She is also in a position to pay a fine."

Sheriff Clair McLachlan said: "It is an unfortunate incident which to your credit you have expressed regret and embarrassment.

"I take onboard that since then you have been on good behaviour and you are willing to engage with the supervision."

She was placed on a community payback order for 12 months under social work supervision.
