A MAN is behind bars after admitting his 21st driving while disqualified offence.

Kevin Hogg, 31, was caught speeding behind the wheel of a stolen BMW on the M80 towards Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire, on April 21 2023.

Hogg had taken the vehicle a week before and replaced the number plates on it.

After being clocked by police, Hogg raced off at 100 miles per hour in a bid to get away.

He was later found hidden in a garage and arrested when his previous driving record was uncovered.

Hogg pleaded guilty on Thursday at Glasgow Sheriff Court to dangerous driving and driving while disqualified.

He also admitted two car thefts, driving without insurance, failing to stop for police and displaying false number plates.

Sheriff Barry Divers also noted that this was Hogg's seventh driving while disqualified offence in four years.

It was also Hogg's fifth conviction for dangerous driving and his fourth and fifth conviction for stealing cars.

One of the previous convictions includes stealing a luxury Mercedes in Perth which he told police he picked up as part of a breakdown service.

The court heard that a grey BMW and another BMW were stolen from properties in Glasgow on April 13 and 17 2023.

On April 21 an officer spotted the grey BMW travelling in excess of the 70 limit and followed it.

An alert was sent to other officers to keep tabs on the vehicle and stop it.

Hogg became aware of the police presence and drove on the hard shoulder at speed.

Emergency lights and sirens were activated as Hogg made his way off a slip road towards Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire, at 80 miles per hour.

Prosecutor Ross Canning said: "He travelled at speeds of 100 miles per hour and undertook a member of the public."

Hogg went on to crash into a Volvo car causing the front of his vehicle to be badly damaged.

He exited the car and tried to escape on foot before being found in a garage.

Hogg was found with car keys for a BMW, a Vauxhall, and a Jaguar as well as a mobile phone.

He provided a negative sample for alcohol but was found to be a disqualified driver.

The car he was driving was discovered as being the grey BMW he had stolen whose number plates were in the boot.

The other stolen car was recovered.

Sheriff Divers asked lawyer Marisa Borland: "This is his 21st conviction for driving while disqualified?"

Miss Borland replied: "If you have counted it, I will not challenge that."

Sheriff Divers said: "Not only is he driving dangerously, on frequent occasions he is driving cars that are stolen.

"This poses serious harm to the public."

Sentence was deferred pending background reports until next month.

Hogg was remanded in custody meantime.
