St Andrew's Hospice were "blown away" after a huge donation in honour of Rangers legend Jimmy Bell.

The former kitman's wife Janis and daughter Ashley attended the hospice in Airdrie this week to present a cheque worth £4,000 thanks to Rangers fan group Bars for Bears.

The Glasgow Times previously reported that the group helped put together a memorial match against Dukla Pumpherston in Renfrew at New Western Park to raise money for charities and to honour the memory of Jimmy.

Glasgow Times:

Former Gers players such as Colin Hendry, Marvin Andrews, Willie Henderson, Andy Little, Gordon Smith, John MacDonald and Gordon Durie all played for the Bars for Bears legends team.

Other ex-pros including Brian McPhee and Jose Quitongo helped make up the team.

Overall, the match was able to raise £8,000 which will be split evenly between St Andrew's Hospice and The Rangers Erskine Appeal.

Speaking at the hospice, Ashley was thrilled to provide funds for a cause that is close to their heart.

She said: "The hospice is close to us because my gran was here and my dad had links through Fernando Ricksen.

"We always wanted to do something like this and my dad was a big one for Erskine too.

"The stories that you hear about my dad in the places are always nice and to still see the support for him is brilliant."

Ashley added that the money raised means a lot to herself and her family as they know how hard it can be to get donations in.

She said: "I know how hard it is through Covid and things like that for charities to get the money they need.

"It will go a long way to help the people here, plus you never imagine getting anywhere near that amount.

"So to get £8,000 is massive."

Glasgow Times:

Lorrett McCutcheon, of St Andrew's Hospice, said: "That money will support so many patients and families here.

"It has been so difficult to fundraise due to the cost of living crisis and it has never been as hard to do it as it is now

"That amount of money is going to go so far to make for the people within the hospice.

"It is people like this (the Bell family) who are the real heroes in raising the money."

The Jimmy Bell Memorial Cup will return next year on the June 8 with the founder of Bars for Bears Suzanne Oz excited to make it bigger and better.

She added: "I would like to thank all the sponsors and the fans who contributed to the event.

"I’m very proud of Bars for Bears and Dukla Pumpherston and the Rangers legends for not only raising money for charities but creating something special for the Bell family.

"Having raised over 30k in three years tells you that Bars for Bears are good at making money, but making memories is what we’re simply the best at."
