A FURIOUS Barrhead pensioner has hit out at East Renfrewshire Council due to overflowing bins being abandoned in the street.

Elizabeth Middleton, who lives on Divernia Way in the town, has claimed that the local authority hasn't emptied bins on her street for "weeks".

According to the 69-year-old, rubbish has been able to "fly" everywhere in the area, while it has also been "infested by rats".

Glasgow Times:

She said: "The issue is the bins haven't been emptied for weeks upon weeks and they are overflowing.

"All the rubbish is flying into our gardens, and we have to then go out and pick it up.

Glasgow Times:

"We keep our places tidy, and it's a pure eyesore - we've found rats and everything."

The frustrated woman revealed she and her neighbours have already contacted the local authority regarding the problem.

Glasgow Times:

Elizabeth said: "We've all phoned the council and they have done nothing about it - they just put you onto Environmental Health which takes five days to get a response.

"They are their bins - why aren't they emptying them?

"It's ridiculous.

"You never see a councillor or anything up here. So, I think it's about time they came up and looked at this street and got something done about it."

Glasgow Times:

The fed-up woman, who has lived in her home for 36 years, also revealed several other issues regarding the bins.

These include birds pulling the rubbish out, with it ending up in their gardens.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth says she hasn't been able to open her windows due to flies or sit outside because of the smell.

Now, the council have confirmed that the rubbish was "unable" to be uplifted due to the bins being "contaminated with non-recyclable waste".

Glasgow Times:

An East Renfrewshire spokesperson said: "These bins were contaminated with non-recyclable waste, so our crew was unable to uplift them. We've arranged a separate collection of the waste for later this week. We're also working to find a long-term solution to this ongoing issue."
