A Proclaimers fan has set the monumental task of walking 500 miles from France to Spain in tribute to his dad.

Robert McComb, 61, is a keen hillwalker from Kirkintilloch and will be taking on the challenge in April next year which is expected to last five weeks.

Robert hopes that doing this journey will not only raise money for Beatson Cancer Charity but also help him pay tribute to his father, Nicol, who passed away in 1997.

In 1978, Nicol was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma which according to Robert was a near on "death sentence" at the time. But after treatment, Nicol got to spend another 19 years with his family and even got to see his grandson, David, Robert's first son, before passing away at the age of 59.

He said: "I am really looking forward to taking this challenge on. I have done a couple of 100-mile walks before but this is massive.

"I learned that my work colleague's daughter had been diagnosed with cancer during her pregnancy and the team at Beatson have been supporting her since her diagnosis.

"I said to someone on one of my hillwalks that I would walk 500 miles for the charity as I am a big Proclaimers fan.

"An idea that is crazy but I love it.

"And with my dad having suffered from cancer too, it is a way that I can raise funds for everything the charity does but also allow me to hopefully connect with him.

"With the Beatson's support, we had those precious extra years with my dad, which was great, and he was able to share that time with his grandchildren.

"There were so many times we thought we would lose him so it meant a lot to us as a family the support they gave."

Robert, who also DJs in his spare time, will be starting at St John Pied de Port in France and travel across the Pyrenees over the Spanish border before making his way down to Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, in Northwestern Spain.

He will also be packing lightly and has not booked any hotels on the way with the Scot hostel hoping along his route and flicking through his Proclaimer's selection to pass the time.

And being a TikTok creator, Robert has decided to take his drone to vlog his journey for people to follow him.

He added: "My dad was always an upbeat person and one of a kind.

"Getting to see him spend time with my first son David meant a lot to me, and I know that he loved every second he spent with him too.

"I will be taking rock from Scotland with me and placing it on this Pilgrims route in Spain that is famous for people leaving a rock for loved ones, so I am doing that for him.

"Flights have been booked and now I am looking forward to getting underway."
