Motherwell Concert Hall and Theatre has closed with "immediate effect" after RAAC has been found at the site.

The North Lanarkshire venue posted on X (formerly Twitter) about the closure of the venue after Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) was discovered in the roof.

North Lanarkshire Council also revealed that water leaks had been discovered in the roof which would mean the building can't "operate as normal" while the survey is being carried out.

In a statement on social media, Motherwell Theatre said: "Motherwell Concert Hall & Theatre will be closed with immediate effect after an initial survey found RAAC in the roof.

"A full intrusive survey is required. While this is carried out, the venue will remain closed. Ticket holders will be contacted for performances affected."

When contacted for comment a council spokesperson said, “An initial inspection of the Motherwell Theatre and Concert Hall has found that the majority of the roof is made with reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) planks.

“The inspection also found some evidence of water ingress to the roof. These findings mean that a full intrusive survey must be carried out.

"Unfortunately it is not possible to operate the building as normal while this survey takes place and with the safety of the public and staff firmly in mind, we have decided that the theatre and concert hall will be closed with immediate effect until further notice.

“The team at the concert hall will be touch directly with ticket holders for performances affected.”
