AN Elderslie man who is living with a rare cancer has praised the local community for rallying round his efforts to help others who have the same illness.
Craig Speirs, who was diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer a decade ago, will host a sponsored firewalk at Johnstone Bowling Club next month to raise cash for charity.
Around 100 people have signed up to join him in taking part in the event, with the proceeds going to Neuroendocrine Cancer UK.
Craig, 42, told The Gazette: “I have been amazed by the response so far from local people, who have really bought into what we are trying to do.
“The firewalk has grown in popularity and is really becoming a community event.
“We also have the support of local businesses like Elderslie Coffee Shop, Elderslie Butchers, Elderslie Golf Club and Johnstone Burgh FC.”
Little is known about neuroendocrine cancer, which only effects seven out of 100,000 people.
As a result of the disease, Craig has had two heart operations and gets weekly visits from a nurse to help with his medication.
He also speaks about his illness at medical conferences and attends the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre, in Glasgow, every eight weeks.
The cancer has spread to different organs in his body, including his stomach and liver, and is too advanced for surgery.
Craig, who had to give up his job as an area manager for a major security company after he was diagnosed, said: “Neuroendocrine is a slow-growing cancer. Unfortunately, at this point, there is no way of doing surgery to remove it, as it is too advanced in my body.
“Treatments are very expensive and there are not many about.

“It is not about getting rid of the cancer but stopping it progressing any further.”
Craig has already helped to coin in £54,000 for Neuroendocrine Cancer UK through a series of charity events, including two Kiltwalks.
Now the married dad-of-two is looking forward to boosting that total even further through the firewalk.
He picked Friday, November 10, as the date for the event as it is Neuroendocrine Cancer Awareness Day.
A firewalk instructor will be there on the night to provide training to those taking part.
