WHEN director Connor McAnea entered his firm into the recent Home Improvement Awards he thought they had a good chance of winning at least one of the categories.

In fact, Future Building Developments Ltd not only won Best Building Contractor and Best Joinery Firm but was also highly recommended in the Best Extension/Conversion category.

“A lot of people said it was well deserved but it was still a shock to come away with all three – I thought we might win one so that was great,” said Mr McAnea. “It was brilliant to win and an amazing experience. We have worked hard for it. I’m so proud of the team members of our staff and contractors for their hard work each and every week.”

Many of the firm’s customers would agree the awards are well deserved. Indeed some of them are so happy with the work that they freely give references to future clients and even invite them to their homes to view the results.

Much of the work the Renfrew based business picks up is through word of mouth with clients impressed at the efficiency and professionalism of the firm.

“I’ve been pleased that people love our builds so much they are willing to give references and even invite future customers to their homes to show them what we have done,” said McAnea. “It’s a real vote of confidence in us.”

He has been working in the industry for 15 years, first working for his father, Scott, then taking over the reins two years ago. Although his father, who has 30 years of experience in the building trade, took a step back he is still very much involved.

“Because we have been in the industry so long we are well organised and do a real professional job,” Mr McAnea said. “We know how to finish and people seem to like it. We are also efficient. People always commenting on how speedily we can carry out the project.”

The business’s core staff are all experienced joiners and a number of contractors work on a steady basis on all the builds.

It means Future Building Developments Ltd can organise the whole job from start to finish, so all the work can be carried out on schedule as planned.

“I’m loyal to my contractors and so we use the same ones every week,” said Mr McAnea. “We organise the plumbers, electricians, bricklayers, roofers, plasterers and roughcasters. The only people I don’t supply are painters and tilers as people often have someone in mind or want to do that themselves. I can recommend trustworthy painters and decorators if required.”

Future Building Developments Ltd caters for all aspects of building, including extensions, sunrooms, new builds, renovations, garage conversions and loft conversions.

“We have a commitment to put the customer at the heart of all the company's services and this is illustrated by our excellent repeat business performance,” said Mr McAnea.

Although the business is based in Renfrew it covers the whole of the west of Scotland and regularly takes on projects in Newton Mearns, Giffnock, Clarkston, Houston, Erskine and Bishopton.

Unlike many other firms in the sector, Future Building Developments Ltd does not take money in advance. Instead clients are given a quote, work schedule and payment plan prior to the start of the job, which is fully insured and guaranteed.

“A lot of build companies take money up front but we don’t,” said Mr McAnea. “People know we are going to turn up to a job when we say we will and are not going to take their money and keep them hanging on.  I’ve had people saying to me they have had a builder that’s taken thousands from them and then not come back.  It gives builders a bad name so to show loyalty to people we have never taken money up front. We have never had an issue with people cancelling us either.”

Small wonder then that Future Building Developments Ltd is booked up to August next year and has doubled in size in recent years, growing from four members of staff to ten. A fleet of new vans has been purchased as a result of the growth.

“I’m very pleased with how it is going,” said Mr McAnea. “We are always booked up in advance so it has been good that way.”
