UPDATE: The road reopened at 1.30pm.

A man has been arrested while the M8 near Glasgow Airport is still shut due to a fire. 

We previously reported that the westbound road had been shut at junction 28a since around 3.40am due to vehicle fire.

Emergency crews including firefighters and cops were called to the scene and the blaze was put out.

The area remains closed and a diversion is in place for drivers.

Officers confirmed that a full investigation has been launched and that a 36-year-old man was arrested in connection with an alleged road traffic offence.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 2.55am on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, police received a report of a damaged vehicle on fire, on the M8 near junction 29, Paisley.

“Emergency services attended and the fire was extinguished.

"A 36-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a road traffic offence and enquiries to establish the full circumstances are ongoing.

“The road is currently closed to allow for investigation and recovery to take place.

"Local diversions are in place.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 3.05am on Tuesday, November 7 to reports of a vehicle fire on the M8, near Paisley.

"Operations Control mobilised two fire appliances to the scene, where firefighters extinguished the fire and worked to make the area safe before leaving the scene.

"There were no casualties."
