Council chiefs have provided an update on the latest inspections of Renfrewshire schools after the recent discovery of a potentially dangerous concrete in the gym hall roof at Castlehead High School in Paisley.

Reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) – a lightweight material that can be susceptible to failure when exposed to moisture – was discovered at the Camphill facility around three weeks ago.

Checks of other gym hall roofs were scheduled at Johnstone High School, Gryffe High School, Trinity High School, Paisley Grammar School and Renfrew High School, while a second phase of primary school inspections was carried out.

But it has since been confirmed no more RAAC has been found.

Chris Dalrymple, the council’s head of facilities and property services, said: “I wanted to update you on the outcome of additional assessments and inspections checking for the presence of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) across our schools and early learning and childcare centres.

“A second phase was being carried out to provide additional reassurance and validate our initial assessments and inspections.

“During this second phase, you will be aware we identified the presence of RAAC at Castlehead High School limited to the school gym hall roof.

“This was intimated to elected members and to parents and carers of Castlehead HS pupils on October 24, 2023, and we advised elected members of further assessments being carried out to gym hall roofs at secondary schools and to our primary schools.

“These additional assessments and inspections have now been completed and no further presence of RAAC has been identified at any of our schools and early learning and childcare centres.

“Our additional assessments involved visual and intrusive inspections where required and we also engaged external consultants to carry out an assurance of our approach and physically inspect selected schools.”

The council previously confirmed it had taken the decision to close the gym at Castlehead High for remedial works, which are expected to take months.

Mr Dalrymple added in the latest update: “The gym halls remain closed, and the remedial works are being finalised.

“We will continue to keep elected members, parents and carers updated.

“Alternative arrangements for PE are in place for pupils, with indoor provision at the Lagoon Leisure Centre.”
