A LOCAL sports club is trying to raise vital funds to become more accessible and sustainable for the local community.

Langside Sports Club (LSC) is a charity based in the heart of Newlands, Langside, Battlefield and Cathcart in Albert Park and is focused on making a positive impact through sport, biodiversity, volunteering and recreation.

Last December, it was awarded the UK Government’s Levelling Up Community Ownership Award and got matched funding up to £100,000 to redevelop the clubhouse and pavilion.

Glasgow Times:

The club has used some of their own funds to access a partial amount of the award but Jackie Clark, project officer, says despite the funding the club still has necessary work they want to take place.

She said: “There’s been really limited opportunities to access capital funding projects and we’ve been in a position where we still have some essential and necessary work we want to take place.

“We won’t be able to do everything that we’ve outlined for the Community Ownership Project and to get our buildings where we want them to be.

“But these projects that are outlined, such as a new heating system, windows and shutters, and accessible toilet, these are still things we want to push forward and get in place.”

Glasgow Times:

LSC offers facilities for cricket, tennis, bowls and a variety of other sports for all ages, as well as biodiversity and volunteering opportunities.

Jackie says the work is important as it will make the club more accessible for the community and more sustainable.

She said: “It’s vital for the club because it will make us more inclusive and accessible.

“We are widely used within the community and have more than 350 members and several groups.

“We’re a recognised Glasgow Life Community Sports Club and we have other groups using our facilities, its used in a variety of ways so we feel we are at the heart of the community.

“It’s a dear green space, one of the few left in Glasgow in community ownership and we want to widen what we offer.”

Glasgow Times:

She continued: “We feel helping to progress the club, the buildings, the facilities, is paramount and its vital to have these within the community.”

LSC has now launched a Crowdfunder with the aim of raising £20,000 by the end of November to help the push the work forward.

So far, more than £1500 has been raised.

Glasgow Times:

Jackie says it’s “great” to have donations already and says the club will be reaching out to local businesses for support.

She added: “The work will make a huge difference to the club and its great to have that support.

“We welcome any contribution to help get these projects over the line.”

Langside Sports Club is located at Albert Park, 34-36 Kintore Road, Glasgow, G43 2HA.
