A Glasgow woman has won £100 after binning her litter in an initiative that looks to encourage people to use bins.

Sarah Girasoli, who is a teacher, banked the money after she recorded herself using the bin on the LitterLotto app which was launched by Keep Scotland Beautiful and LitterLotto.

Sarah has been trying to get others involved and believes that rewarding people for doing the right thing is vital in tackling the litter emergency.

The 33-year-old said: "In my area of Yoker the litter can be terrible and we’ve organised quite a few community litter picks [and] I’ve been trying to get volunteers from the community [involved].

“I think it’s all about rewarding. My kids love the LitterLotto app – when they get the coins they think it’s amazing – so they were litter picking I started speaking to a couple of adults and they were saying it sounds amazing and something that they would do.

“I’ve been telling teachers at school about it and I’ve been telling the kids to get their mums and dads involved too.

"I’ve been trying to spread the word as much as possible because I think it’s something people would buy into. I know when I told my department about it they all downloaded the app straight away.”

Glasgow Times:

The partnership, launched in November 2022, encourages more people to bin their litter and offers monthly prizes rewarding people for doing the right thing.

And for Sarah, her efforts to keep her community clean have only been enthused by LitterLotto.

She added: “I’m one of these people that if I see something I don’t like it then I’ll do something about it”

“Litter really, really annoys me and I hate flytipping too.

"We’re right on the Clyde and it’s really lovely where we are, and I think these things just let the area down and it gives areas bad names.

“I’ve always been a litter picker but I do think with the app I [now] do it a lot more. I used to just do litter picking in my area and at the school, but now when I’m out and about I’ll pick it up, put it in a bin and do it in the app.

“Although I always have been a litter picker, I would probably say I’m now an extreme litter picker and it has been the app that has encouraged me to do that more.”

Glasgow Times:

Heather McLaughlin, campaigns coordinator at Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “I’m delighted to see that Sarah has been rewarded for doing the right thing through our partnership with LitterLotto.

“This collaboration is all about encouraging people to help tackle the country’s litter emergency and it’s brilliant to see people across the country getting involved.

“I’m looking forward to seeing many more Scottish winners benefitting from helping to keep Scotland beautiful.”

Keep Scotland Beautiful and Glasgow City Council recently launched their own partnership with LitterLotto, meaning there is now three opportunities for Glaswegians to win with LitterLotto.

The LitterLotto app is available to download for free on the App Store and Android Store.
