LORRAINE Kelly says she was "a wreck" after her beloved dog Ruby was rushed to the vet after being poisoned.

The TV presenter revealed on social media her mini wire-haired dachshund had to be rushed to the vet after she ate chocolate from Lorraine's bag.

Chocolate is toxic to dogs as it contains a chemical called theobromine, as well as caffeine, which cannot be metabolised by dogs as well as humans.

Lorraine took to Instagram to warn other dog owners to be careful over the festive season and make sure they don't eat any chocolate.

Sharing a picture of Ruby at the vet, she wrote: "Urgent. This was our [Ruby] yesterday after eating chocolate wrapped up in my bag.

"She was very poorly and I was a wreck.

"PLEASE make sure your beloved puppies and dogs don’t eat chocolate or mince pies over [Christmas] because it can be life-threatening.

"Ruby was on a drip and it was very very scary.

"She’s totally fine now but I don’t want any other little animal or their human to go through such a trauma."

Fans of Lorraine took to the comments to share their own stories and praised her for sharing the warning.

One person wrote: "My first fur baby passed away from eating chocolate.

"Such an important message to put out to keep a close eye on what dogs consume."

Another said: "Sending get well soon messages to your Ruby. So glad she’s on the mend.

"Sadly my first childhood dog Tansy passed away due to chocolate poisoning.

"It was so sad to watch her suffer from that in her final hours.

"Thank you for bringing this to dog owners' attention as it will absolutely prevent others from suffering."

A third person added: "That's a great example Lorraine that we should never let our dogs eat chocolate.

"You were not to know she would go in your bag. Sending her love."
