Th effects will continue into today  and transport firms have warned services will be cancelled and no trains will run in the morning rush hour.

ScotRail said tracks need to be checked for incidents like fallen trees before trains can run after Network Rail closed the railways to passenger trains from 7pm last night.

Scotrail said: “Heavy winds of up to 70/80 mph are expected, which could lead to trees and other debris falling onto the tracks, making conditions unsafe to operate trains. This could also lead to trains being trapped on the network.

“Line closures will continue into Monday. Each route will have to undergo a safety inspection, which means it will be later on Monday before any trains can run.”

“We've lifted all ticket restrictions on ScotRail services, tickets dated 21 January will be accepted for travel on 22 and 23 January.”

Transport Scotland said: “An amber warning for wind has been declared which covers the southern half of Scotland, south of Stirling from 6pm on Sunday afternoon (21 January) until 9am on Monday morning (22 January).”
