STAFF and pupils at a North Lanarkshire secondary school have been commended by inspectors following a recent visit.

Our Lady’s High School in Cumbernauld received a very positive Education Scotland report, which highlighted high-quality learning, teaching and attainment.

The report praised the “strong and effective leadership” of headteacher Nicola Cunningham and added she is “well supported by all staff.”

The report also noted the school’s “aspirational and positive climate for learning” and added: “Teachers support the learning of young people very well.”

High levels of attainment in literacy were recognised, and inspectors noted the wide range of well-considered clubs and activities that develop young people’s leadership skills and skills for learning, life and work.

Education Scotland inspectors visited the school in October 2023 and met with the headteacher and staff, parents, carers and young people.

Headteacher Nicola Cunningham said: “We are delighted that Education Scotland recognised all staff work together to ensure our young people are well supported in their learning.

“We are extremely proud of our pupils and their fantastic contribution during the inspection. We look forward to building on our success in the future to further enhance our community of faith and learning.”

The report also identified areas where the school should continue to improve, including raising attainment in numeracy, and of the highest-achieving pupils, and in senior leaders’ approaches to monitoring how well the school is accelerating progress of young people living in the most deprived areas.

It also added senior leaders should continue to share further good practice in learning, teaching and assessment within the school, locally and nationally.

Councillor Angela Campbell, convener of North Lanarkshire Council’s education, children and families committee, said: “I would like to congratulate Nicola and her team at Our Lady’s High School on the report, which reflects the hard work and commitment of all the teachers and staff to providing a first-class education for every pupil.

“It is also testament to the hard work of the pupils themselves as well as the families and local community who support the school's work in so many ways. Well done to everyone involved.”
