A CITY bank worker has scooped a top honour after being named Apprentice Ambassador of the Year award.

Missy-Anne Spence, 31, is the top mentor on Lloyds Banking Group’s Connector App. Her efforts were recognised at an event on March 8.

She was the bank's first apprentice in 2012 embarking on a Modern Apprenticeship in Providing Financial Services after her children started school.

Her dedication and experience gained from the apprenticeship led her to becoming a proactive ambassador for apprenticeships within the bank, committing her own time to support initiatives that endorse them and mentoring newcomers.

She said: "I personally wouldn't be where I am if it wasn't for my apprenticeships.

“Being given that opportunity makes me want to inspire others to do the same because nothing beats the feeling of seeing someone else succeed.”

Last year, she gave more than 50 hours of her free time to the Lloyds' Skillsbuilder Programme, facilitating sessions to school pupils about essential skills.

Steve Johnston, coach team leader at Lloyds Banking Group UK Private Banking Financial, said: “Missy-Anne is really driven to succeed and an absolutely brilliant role model.

"She is very good at encouraging others in their own development and has such a positive impact on everyone she comes into contact with. She is an absolute star.”

Derek Farrell, head of delivery at Babington, described Ms Spence as a "true champion" of further vocational learning, showing the real and life-changing value apprenticeships can provide.

Gillian Martin, minister for Energy, Just Transition and Fair Work, presented butcher Marc Ingram with the overall award of Scotland’s Apprentice of the Year.

She said: “Apprenticeships are a vital part of Scotland’s skills system, and key to supporting our young people into rewarding careers, while helping others upskill, reskill and progress in their chosen careers.

“The Scottish Government’s priority is to ensure that our apprenticeships are of high quality and lead to sustainable employment opportunities with fair work principles at the core.

“I congratulate Marc and all of the award finalists and winners. They are an inspiration and I wish them well in their future careers.”
