A boy has been arrested after allegedly assaulting a young pupil at a Coatbridge school.

Police rushed to the North Lanarkshire campus after the incident allegedly broke out at lunch time.

A 12-year-old boy needed medical treatment while a 13-year-old boy was charged in connection.

He will now be the subject of a report to the Youth Justice Assessor.

The school cannot be named for legal reasons at this time.

One mother of a pupil at the school told the Glasgow Times: “My son called me in a panic saying someone had been hurt.

“I called the school who said I wasn’t allowed to pick up my child yet and to stay away, it felt like they were in lockdown.

“It is really worrying that violent incidents can happen at a school.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 1pm on Thursday, 21 March, 2024, police were called to a report of a disturbance within a school in Coatbridge.

“Officers attended and a 12-year-old boy who had been assaulted during the disturbance received first aid treatment.

“A 13-year-old boy has been charged in connection and will be the subject of a report to the Youth Justice Assessor.”

A spokesperson for North Lanarkshire Council said: "An incident took place at a secondary school today which was dealt with quickly and professionally by staff.

"The police were called to the school and are carrying out investigations."
