Two Glasgow men have been recognised for their dedication to improving their local environment.

James Wilson and Hugh McPharlin were awarded Neighbourhood Champion Awards by Keep Scotland Beautiful and Wheatley Group.

This was in recognition of their efforts to improve community participation, improve local environmental quality, promote sustainable living practices, and restore biodiversity.

Both men are residents of Wheatley Homes Glasgow in the city's north east.

James, also known as Jimmy, has lived in Barmulloch for six years.

He has been actively involved with other residents in community improvement efforts.

His initiatives include planting flowers to brighten the area and transforming the communal gardens at the complex.

He has also trimmed back bushes and painted benches and furniture.

The residents appreciate his work, which has instilled a sense of pride in the community.

Hugh is a resident at the Marfield complex, and was nominated for his efforts in growing plants and vegetables such as carrots and potatoes in his planters.

He shares the produce with other residents.

His plants have not only brightened the grounds of the complex but have also encouraged other residents to use the gardens during the summer months.

Hugh is also involved in community activities such as bingo nights and regularly collects groceries and newspapers for other tenants who cannot get to a shop.

Jamie Ormiston, training and accreditation coordinator at Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: "It’s fantastic to see Jimmy and Hugh recognised for their efforts to improve their local area for both themselves and other Wheatley tenants.

“The Neighbourhood Champion Awards were created to celebrate those going above and beyond to improve local environmental quality, community wellbeing and participation and biodiversity.

"Their efforts are greatly appreciated, by us and Wheatley and, I’m sure, by those in the community."

Alan Glasgow, director of housing at Wheatley Group, said: "We’re delighted the fantastic efforts of our tenants have been recognised at Keep Scotland Beautiful’s Neighbourhood Champion awards.

"Both are hugely deserving of this recognition for their efforts in the community.

"We work side by side every day with tenants to make our homes and neighbourhoods great places to live and areas where people are proud to call home.

“The work of Jimmy, Hugh and our staff has made such a positive impact in their communities, and they should all be very proud of everything they’ve achieved.”
