A major supermarket chain has closed several of its stores in Glasgow and across Scotland due to Storm Eowyn.

Sainsbury's announced its supermarkets and convenience shops in Scotland and Northern Ireland are currently shut due to the brutal weather conditions.

The extreme storm is set to batter the country with strong winds and rain throughout the day.

Yesterday, we reported how the Met Office issued a red weather warning for central Scotland from 10am until 5pm today.

In pictures captured by our photographer, Colin Mearns, a sign on the door of the Sainsbury's Local store on Darnley Road in the Southside reads: "Due to the storm the store will be shut till 6pm.

"Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused."

"In Northern Ireland, all stores will be closed from 7am until 3pm.

"In Scotland, stores within the most significantly impacted areas will be closed from 7am to 6pm.

"Stores will reopen once it is safe to do so after the weather warning lifts.

"All grocery online deliveries, on-demand services and Fast Track deliveries for Northern Ireland and Scotland will also be cancelled tomorrow until conditions improve.

"Customers with cancelled groceries online orders and Fast Track orders across Scotland and Northern Ireland will be contacted directly to apologise for the inconvenience this may cause."

The spokesperson added: “Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our colleagues and customers.

"We understand this decision may be inconvenient to some of our customers and we hope they understand.”

It comes after we reported how Scots have been urged to stay indoors after the Met Office issued a red danger to life warning for wind on Friday.

Trains have been suspended across the country and hundreds of schools will be closed after forecasters predicted wind speeds of up to 100mph during Storm Eowyn.

Meanwhile, Police Scotland said no motorists should travel in or to the red weather warning area while train operator ScotRail said all services were being suspended due to safety concerns.

The Met Office red warning runs from 10am to 5pm and covers the central belt including Glasgow and Edinburgh, stretching north on the west coast to Jura in Argyll and Bute and south to Stranraer in Dumfries and Galloway.
