Glasgow boy received over 800 birthday cards in hospital

Beau Pallester celebrated his fifth birthday at Glasgow Children’s Hospital on Sunday, along with Christmas and New Year too.

The youngster, from Whiteinch, was in intensive care last year after vomiting blood, with doctors still searching for answers.

We previously reported how his mother Nicola Carey, 38, asked if anyone could send him a birthday card to cheer him up.

Now hundreds of big-hearted well wishers have made Beau’s day special by letting him know he is in their thoughts.

Nicola said: “Beau has over 800 so far and that’s not including the school or family yet.

“It’s just amazing as everyone has used different styles of cards with different textures and some with lights and pop ups on them.

"Beau has just sat this morning exploring and opening them all.

“It is just nice to know there are some nice kind people still in this crazy world that we live in now.

“He’s a very lucky and loved boy and has had some gifts from complete strangers which is just beautiful.”

We previously reported how Beau has Waardenburg-Shah syndrome and Hirschsprung’s disease, which means he struggles with mobility and is non verbal.

His condition affects around one in every 40,000 babies and can vary in severity from one person to the next.

Now he remains in hospital waiting for bowel surgery, when he is stable again, as doctors continue to hunt for answers about his vomiting.

Children at St Timothy's Primary School were among well wishers who wanted to cheer him up.

This included seven-year-old Lily Phinn who was excited to send a card for Beau.

She said: “I put leaves on my card and added glitter because it is his birthday.

"He likes textures so I made the leaves feel nice so he could touch them.

“We wrote inside Happy Birthday Beau lots of love everyone in primary three. It was very calming and fun.”

Carol Jolly, class teacher at St Timothy’s Primary School said: “We knew this would be something the children would be desperate to take part in for Beau.

“As soon as I asked my class if they would like to make birthday cards for a wee boy in hospital they were cheering.

“We asked them what five-year-olds like and they were desperate to come up with ideas.

“We just want to send our best wishes with all the cards the school made and hope that Beau has a brilliant birthday.

“It is quite overwhelming seeing it all come together and how much love and support our school has to show, it is really nice.”
