AFTER the shock news that long-running soap River City is to end next year, we took a trawl through the archives to remember some of the big stars who have appeared on the show.

Stephen Purdon, who plays Shellsuit Bob, is the only remaining original member of the cast.

In its early days, big names such as Neighbours star Stefan Dennis, and Lorraine McIntosh from Scottish pop band Deacon Blue, were part of the show.

Lorraine played Alice Henderson from 2002 until around eight years later. She was jailed after trying to frame a teacher for child pornography.

Stefan played the evil Dr Marcus Mackenzie, eventually stabbed to death by a woman he tried to attack.

A young Sam Heughan, who would go on to mega fame with Outlander, starred as footballer Andrew Murray.

For the 20th anniversary celebrations, he told BBC Scotland: “At the press call, I was asked to do some keepie-uppie for the photographers and it was extremely mortifying when I probably managed about three and looked like a complete idiot.

“My time on River City was really an incredible time.”

Simon Webbe from Blue also had a part in the show in 2016, as Andy, a former army man and friend of the Roth family.

At the time, he said of joining the show: "Going from being a TV extra into being in a boy band, it's an absolute dream come true.

“River City is full of feisty characters and I can't wait to get my teeth into Andy's storylines."

Singer Susan Boyle, broadcaster Lorraine Kelly and Radio 2 DJ Scott Mills are among the celebrities to have made cameo appearances over the years.

Daytime TV queen Lorraine dropped in a special guest at Gina and Archie’s wedding.

Susan said: “I had a brilliant time filming River City. All the cast and crew were so kind and welcoming, it was a great atmosphere. I’m a huge fan of the show and always watch it, so to be a part of it and on set was fantastic.”

Other well-known Scottish actors to appear in the series include Outlander actor Gary Lamont, who played hairdresser Robbie Fraser, Taggart star Colin McCredie, and Libby McArthur.

Gary had some properly juicy storylines on River City. He joined in 2009, and endured everything from addiction and domestic abuse to coping with parenthood.

Libby was one of the original stars of the show back in 2002. She played Oyster Café owner Gina Ross, and one of her biggest storylines was being jilted at the altar. She left in 2013.

Veteran Scottish stars Johnny Beattie, Una McLean and Eileen McCallum also made their mark on the show.
