NHS Lanarkshire is urging people with heart conditions to get the flu vaccine amid warnings of serious health risks.

The call comes as the flu season draws closer, with health experts highlighting the heightened dangers faced by those with cardiovascular disease.

Serious flu-related complications can include heart attacks, heart failure flare-ups, arrhythmias and strokes, with the virus causing inflammation that puts additional strain on the heart and circulatory system.

Data from Lanarkshire shows people with heart conditions make up a significant proportion of flu-related hospital admissions.

Last winter saw some of the highest levels of acute flu admissions since before the pandemic.

Research indicates adults over 40 with heart conditions are at 10 times greater risk of a heart attack within the first three days of catching the flu.

However, the flu vaccine has been shown to reduce the risk of serious heart events.

Dr Andrew Docherty, consultant cardiologist, said: "Flu is a virus that spreads easily and can be very serious.

"Flu causes inflammation and puts extra stress on the heart and circulatory system.

"This can lead to hospitalisation from heart-related problems.

"Getting the flu jab can reduce major heart complications and cardiovascular deaths, especially for those with existing heart disease.

"So if you are offered the flu vaccine, my advice is to take it and protect yourself and your loved ones this winter."
