Rangers captain James Tavernier has emerged as a shock target for Greek Super League side Panathinaikos, according to a new report.

The 34-year-old right-back is out of contract at the end of the season, with no news on a renewal as of yet regarding the Englishman.

Now, Panathanaikos, who are currently managed by former Chelsea, Liverpool, and Real Madrid boss Rafa Benitez, have been named as a potential suitor for Tavernier, with the Athens-based side set to be 'weighing up' a pre-contract offer ahead of a summer move, according to the Daily Mail.

The interested party already has a familiar face on their books, with former Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers having made the move to Greece last year from the Ibrox side.

Since his move from Wigan Athletic in 2015, Tavernier has appeared 550 times for the Glasgow giants, scoring 138 times in the process.

Due to the latter number, the Bradford-born full-back recently became the highest-scoring British defender in history with 146 goals in total.

During his time in Glasgow, Tavernier has won five trophies at Rangers, including the Scottish Premiership in 2021, as well as the Scottish Cup and League Cup in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

Additionally, he won the Scottish Championship in 2016, while also lifting the Challenge Cup in the same season, as Rangers returned to the top-flight.

He captained his side to the Europa League final in 2022, losing out on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt in Seville.

His younger brother, Marcus, currently plays for Bournemouth in the English Premier League.
