Residents are being urged to expect delays and take precautions as Glasgow is placed under a new yellow weather warning.

The Met Office has issued a snow and ice warning, covering Strathclyde.

The warning includes the potential for hazardous travel, slippery pavements, and public transport delays, with wintry showers expected to lead to icy patches and light snowfall.

A Met Office spokesman said: "Snowy, wintry weather can cause delays and make driving conditions dangerous.

"Keep yourself and others safe by planning your route, giving yourself extra time for your journey.

"Check for road closures or delays to public transport and amend plans if necessary.

"If driving, make sure you have some essentials in your car in the event of any delays (e.g., warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, a torch, ice scraper/de icer, a warning triangle, high visibility vest and an in-car phone charger)."

The forecast warns that snow showers, primarily on higher ground, are expected to start to fall to low levels through Thursday evening and overnight.

Accumulations of 1-2 cm are possible on low ground, while areas above 300 metres could see 2 to 5 cm, and up to 10 cm in some locations.

In addition to the snow, temperatures will fall quickly, and this is likely to lead to ice on untreated surfaces.

Residents are being urged to take extra care on the roads and allow more time for their journeys.

The Met Office also advised leaving the house at least five minutes earlier than usual to reduce the risk of slips, falls, or accidents.

People are encouraged to use pavements along main roads, as these are less likely to be icy, and cyclists are advised to use main roads where possible.

The Met Office forecast for Glasgow stated that Thursday would be "cloudy with rain, sleet, and hill snow clearing to the south through the morning to leave a largely dry afternoon with bright or sunny spells developing."

Maximum temperatures are expected to reach 5°C.

The outlook for Friday through Sunday suggests a few coastal showers on Friday but otherwise dry with sunny spells.

Saturday is forecast to remain dry with morning sunshine, becoming cloudier later in the day.

Sunday is expected to be cloudy, with rain and hill snow moving east.
