A path over a former railway line that has been shut for more than a decade is set to reopen.

The footpath on both the north and south sides of Dumbarton Road, between Ellerslie Road and Tweedvale Place, closed in 2014 due to “structural concerns”.

Over the past 12 years, there has been a diversion in place which saw pedestrians rerouted onto a closed section of the road where they were separated from traffic by steel barriers.

Now, a recent assessment of the structural integrity of the bridge has found that the path could handle pedestrian weight.

Following this discovery, Glasgow City Council has allocated £25,000 for the installation of high containment kerbs that will prevent vehicles from parking on the footpath.

Councillor Malcolm Mitchell, who represents the Garscadden/Scotstounhill ward, explained that he asked the council to re-examine the issue.

Cllr Mitchell told the Glasgow Times this is a “win-win” for pedestrians and road users.

He said: "This work will enable the footpath to re-open making travelling this route easier for pedestrians, particularly disabled members of the community.

“Re-opening the footpath also means a greater section of the road will once again be open to motorists and public transport, which is really important on Dumbarton Road, which is a key strategic bus corridor.

"I'm pleased that this work has progressed quickly following the structural assessment. I look forward to the local community being able to access the newly reopened footpath."

No date has yet been confirmed for the reopening of the path.
