The new MSP for Glasgow Anniesland says he is ‘looking forward to getting his sleeves rolled up’ and working to repay the trust of his constituents.
Colm Merrick, of the SNP, was elected on Friday, May 8, after receiving 13,821 votes in the Scottish Parliament election.
He came out on top in the ward, getting the most votes while Eunis Jassemi of Scottish Labour received 9162, Sean O’Hagan of Reform UK got 4839, James Douglas Spiers of the Liberal Democrats took 1688, and Sandesh Gulhane of the Scottish Conservatives received 1404.
Speaking after the result, Colm praised his predecessor, Bill Kidd, who represented the constituency for nearly 15 years.

He said: “It wouldn’t be right to stand up here and not acknowledge the immense contribution to our party, our movement, and our community from my predecessor, indefatigable Bill Kidd.
“A campaign doesn’t just take a herculean effort from the campaign team; none of it would be possible without the support of my family, some of whom are here today.”
Colm continued: “At the outset of the campaign, I talked about how Anniesland meant a great deal to me, and I meant it.
“If you told my parents long before I was born, 70 years ago, when they arrived in Anniesland, that their son would be elected to our Scottish Parliament, I doubt they would believe you, but it is real.
“The people of Glasgow Anniesland have put their faith in me to represent them in our national parliament.
“I will work every day of the next five years to repay that trust.”

When asked what his message was to his constituents in Glasgow Anniesland, Colm stated that he will “work as hard as ever” for them.
He commented: “I am feeling fantastic to have that trust in Glasgow Anniesland. It is fantastic, and I am determined to repay that trust.
“On day one, I’m going to concentrate on the people in the ward and continue the great work of Bill Kidd.
“I’m looking forward to getting my sleeves rolled up and getting into that job. I want to thank the constituents but also reassure them that every single day for the next five years, I will be there for them and we will work as hard as ever.”
