School leavers are being encouraged to consider volunteering as a valuable pathway.

North Lanarkshire Council has issued the call as school leavers weigh up options such as university, college or employment.

The council says volunteering can help young people gain confidence, meet new people and explore their interests while making a positive contribution to their communities.

Councillor Michael McBride, convener of education, said: "As our young people look to the future, it’s important they feel confident and supported in choosing the path that’s right for them.

"Volunteering offers a great opportunity to try new things, gain experience and develop the skills that will help them move forward, whether that’s into further education, training or employment.

"It also allows them to give something back to their communities, which is hugely valuable."

A wide range of volunteering roles are available across North Lanarkshire, including helping at events, supporting younger children, sport, community projects and environmental improvements.

Volunteering can help young people build valuable skills such as teamwork, communication and leadership, all of which are highly regarded by employers.

It also counts as a positive post-school destination.

Opportunities are designed to be flexible, enabling young people to volunteer alongside job hunting, studying or other responsibilities.
