A convicted thug who claimed he was the "devil" and brutally attacked a woman he had been banned from going near was jailed today for four-and-a-half years.

We previously reported that Fraser Barnes turned on the terrified victim at his home, including smacking her head off a radiator.

Barnes' mother later turned up at the property in Kirkintilloch, East Dunbartonshire and discovered the badly hurt woman in a bedroom covered in blood.

The 33-year-old pleaded guilty to an aggravated assault charge at the High Court in Glasgow.

Judge Louise Arrol KC said: "I am satisfied that the normal period of licence will not be adequate to protect the public from serious harm from you.

"I find that you are likely to present as a risk to the public.

"Accordingly, the sentence I will impose will be an extended sentence."

The extended sentence imposed means that Barnes will be under supervision upon his release from prison for two years.

An indefinite non-harassment order was also imposed, which prohibits Barnes' contact with his victim in any way.

Barnes had a non-harassment order imposed against him in 2023, banning him from approaching or contacting the woman.

Prosecutor David Fisken said he had "multiple" assault convictions involving the same woman.

She had gone to his home last August 11.

There was later an argument which saw Barnes lash out.

Prosecutor David Fisken explained: "He grabbed her, pushing her to the ground and against a wall.

"While on the ground, Barnes seized her by the hair and struck her head against a radiator.

"He then sat on the woman, put both hands on her neck and squeezed her throat.

"The woman's breathing was restricted and she was begging him to stop.

"Barnes did not say anything. The woman fell unconscious."

The thug's mother later telephoned him as she planned to visit.

Mr Fisken said: "During the call, Barnes began to state to her that he was the devil, that he had been shot, and someone was lying in his house.

"The mum attended to make sure everything was all right."

Police were alerted - officers found Barnes sitting on a camping chair demanding: "Identify yourself".

He was handcuffed, but then tried to bite two constables and spit at them.

Mr Fisken said the woman suffered a string of injuries to her head, neck, ears and eyes. She also had pain in her ribs.

Barnes pleaded guilty to assaulting the victim to her severe injury, permanent disfigurement and danger of life, as well as an offence of resisting arrest.

Sean Templeton, defending, said: "He wishes the court to know that he fully apologises to the woman for the injuries that she suffered."
