A Lanarkshire dance teacher has launched a fundraiser for a new all-inclusive performing arts group.

Absolutely Everybody will be targeted towards individuals who have learning disabilities.

Leanne Ramage, board member, said: “It's to make theatre accessible to everybody, and to give people a platform to shine."

The organisation consists of five board members, all of whom have been involved with community work in the past. When she isn’t working her day job in a software company, Leanne teaches dance in her spare time.

She explained: “I’ve danced since I was two and I am now 42, so I have danced all my life, and have been involved in many theatre shows throughout my life. I still dance for shows now.”

With ideas first forming in the spring of this year, Leanne, from Bellshill, hopes to run the first show next year.

She added: “We went out to the community and have probably spoken to 20-plus families who all say very similar things; that their children really enjoy music, really connect with music, and there really needs to be more opportunities for them to go to groups with like-minded individuals.”

The five board members opened their registration a couple of weeks ago and already have more than 40 registered performers.

Leanne added: "It's really solidified that the need is very much there.”

Hoping to raise as much funding as possible, the theatre enthusiasts have been out fundraising in local areas.

Leanne said: "We were in Bellshill Tesco this weekend, raising funds, bucket collecting, and I was dressed as Minnie Mouse just to get the word out there, and to raise money.”

All money raised will be put towards start-up costs, subsidised member fees and equipment such as speakers and microphones.

Leanne and the rest of the organisation have selected Orbiston Community Hub as their main location for rehearsals.

She explained: “The hub is great, because it is completely accessible.”

Consisting of 10 volunteers, local young people and parents, Absolutely Everybody has plans for a first show in June of next year. The organisation is aiming to make theatre and creative outlets accessible for all.

Leanne said: “I have met many people with learning disabilities throughout my life. I think the passion and enthusiasm that they have is fabulous. I love helping to unlock their full potential.”
