Rangers told they are 'severely lacking' in two areas

The former Ibrox striker believes the club should focus on players who can immediately impact the starting 11, especially in the wings and right-back positions.

Boyd said: "There are still gaps in Rangers’ squad that need filling. The chairman, Andrew Cavenagh, came out and said they’re looking at between three and five signings. [LiveFootballTickets]

"For me, it has to be three or five signings that go into the starting line-up."

Boyd thinks the squad is too large, with many players left out on match days, which indicates a need to strengthen the starting line-up.

Rangers are reportedly close to a £7 million deal for PSV Eindhoven winger Couhaib Driouech, who is expected to add speed and creativity to the team.

However, Boyd still sees a lack of creativity in the final third as a major issue. He said: "There is no doubt that the wide area is a problem for Rangers.

"The creativity at the top end of the pitch is something that Rangers are severely lacking in right now."

Right-back is another area of concern following James Tavernier's departure. Dujon Sterling and Ross McCrorie are available, but Boyd thinks another specialist is needed, given Sterling's injury history.

He added: "James Tavernier has moved on, Dujon Sterling is a good player, but he can't play every single game with his injury history, so Ross McCrorie came in.

"It may take time for these guys to settle, but for me, I think Rangers need to find a right-back."

Aston Villa's Kosta Nedeljkovic is among the players linked with Rangers. Boyd said: "They've been linked to Kosta Nedeljkovic from Aston Villa, so there is no doubt they're in the market for a right-back."
