A man says he was left in tears after going to visit his mother's grave and finding it overgrown.

The man, who asked to remain anonymous, visited Lambhill Cemetery on Friday, October 2, and was left "disgusted" by the condition of some plots.

He told the Glasgow Times: "I broke down.

"I'm just disgusted with the council.

"If you go to a cemetery outside Glasgow, they're all well looked after, but in Glasgow they're a disgrace."

He added: "It's really disappointing to see the state of that cemetery.

"Some areas are being cut, others are being left."

The man's mum died in 1992, and she would have celebrated her 100th birthday on October 2.

He says he used to visit her grave twice a week, but is not able to go as regularly as he no longer drives due to his health.

He had last been there around six months prior.

He said: "The grass hadn't been cut at my mother's grave and the plots beside it for quite a while.

"There was a plant growing that's taken root in amongst the grass and around the grave.

"It's been neglected, it really has.

"It's hardly been cut this summer.

"It's not knee-high, but I got soaked while walking round the grave."

The man says he has seen similar issues in Lambhill Cemetery for several years and used to maintain the area around his mother's grave.

He said: "When I had my car, I took a lawnmower up and cut around my mother's grave, and then I started cutting around a few others.

"I would pick up the litter round about as there aren't enough bins.

"To me, it's just been left by the council due to cutbacks."

He continued: "I want them [Glasgow City Council] to maintain the cemetery.

"I think it's disgusting."

The Glasgow Times has previously reported in 2023 that Lambhill Cemetery was to be locked up every night following "years" of vandalism.

In June 2022, a 36-year-old man died after his quad bike crashed into a headstone in the North Glasgow cemetery.

Meanwhile, several fires have also been reported over the years.

Fire crews were called to the cemetery in June this year after what appeared to be a monument box was set on fire.

In December 2022, a van was set alight in the graveyard, which the police treated as deliberate.

A year earlier, another wreckage of a vehicle was left at the scene after being torched and was not cleared for almost a month.

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council has apologised to the man and has welcomed a conversation with the man about the state of the cemetery.

He said: "We were saddened to hear the gentleman was upset following his recent visit to the cemetery.

"Regular maintenance is undertaken within the cemetery and further groundwork is expected between now and the end of the growing season.

“The cemetery is also inspected on a routine basis but if there are specific issues the gentleman wishes to raise we would welcome the opportunity to engage with him on these.”
