PLANS have been approved for a new sports facility in Glasgow's East End.

A planning application was submitted to Glasgow City Council by Reidvale Housing Association, seeking permission to transform a basketball court at Whitevale Park.

The site, which the housing association owns, is currently underused.

They plan to create a "lively park" for the community in the future.

As part of this, they will build a sports facility after being given the go-ahead by planning bosses.

A statement in the planning documents read: "The proposal is for the renovation of the existing sports court and the formation of a roof canopy with integral artificial lighting.

"The design aims at providing a new sports facility for the community as well as to regenerate and give relevance to the site.

"Perforated block wall sections are proposed on two of the walls. These shall be made with concrete blocks decorated, ideally, by members of the community as part of a community engagement process.

"The new facility is proposed on the same position as the existing basketball court. The structure features a “suspended” roof that shall characterise the area besides offering protection from the weather.

"The proposal aims at providing the community with a sport facility that can be used at night and with any weather conditions as well as at regenerating an underused area with the potential to became a hub of interest for the local community."
