Kate Garraway is extending her break from Good Morning Britain after husband Derek Draper was admitted to hospital last week in a “very serious condition”.

Derek Draper fell ill in March 2020 after contracting coronavirus and has required a long recovery in intensive care, during which he was placed in a coma.

After more than a year in hospital, he was considered well enough to return to his North London home in April.

Since then, Kate has kept fans updated on her family’s situation as Derek, a former political advisor, continues to recover.

Last week, Kate was taking time off from the ITV breakfast show to be “by her husband’s side” after he took a “turn for the worse”.

A source told The Sun: “Derek has been taken back to hospital this morning in a very serious condition. The family are very worried about him but Derek is in the best hands.

Now, Kate is absent for a second week with her husband reportedly receiving specialist care.

An ITV spokesperson said over her absence: "Kate is taking some time off work over the next few days, and is hoping to be back to her normal presenting duties as soon as possible."

Lorrain Kelly said on her show: "I just wanted to say, we are obviously sending all of our love to our Kate. I know a lot of you have seen in the newspapers and online that Derek is back in hospital and obviously, you know, battling the effects after Covid.

"We just want to send our love to them, don't we?"

She added: "She's amazing. Not one to complain or say 'why me?' or any of that. She's incredible."
